7 Podcasts That Will Help You Forget You’re Single on Valentine’s Day

As an extrovert who works from home all day, I’m constantly searching for ways to feel a little less alone. Eating breakfast, riding the subway, and getting ready to go out are all much more enjoyable with a podcast in the background. With Valentine’s Day around the corner, love in the air, and sex on everyone’s minds as usual, I thought it would be the perfect time to share some of my favorite love, sex and relationship-themed podcasts. Because even if you’re spending time alone, a good (albeit one-sided) conversation is just a click away.

My Dad Wrote a Porno

From left: James Cooper, Jamie Morton and BBC 1’s Alice Levine.

This podcast has three wonderful elements: British accents, sharp humor and terrible erotica. Jamie Morton’s father wrote an erotic novel and instead of being quietly embarrassed he decided to broadcast himself reading it aloud and tearing it to shreds with his friends James Cooper and Alice Levine. Forget about sexiness in any way with this one — much of the hilarity lies in the horrendous syntax and nonsensical narrative structure of the book in question, bizarrely titled “Belinda Blinked.”

Modern Love

Modern Love is a new podcast from the New York Times which acts as an audio version of their popular column of the same name. Listen to personal essays read by familiar voices like Dakota Fanning and Judd Apatow, followed by a Q&A with the writer who gives you a real life update to the story. I especially recommend “Just One Last Swirl Around the Bowl,” by Dan Barry, read by Jason Alexander.

Death, Sex and Money

This one’s pretty self-explanatory. Thoughtful, engaging stories about those three life-altering topics. Produced by WNYC and hosted by Anna Sale, Death, Sex and Money tells the stories of people from all walks of life (including many celebrities) as if they’re your best friend sitting on your bed opening up to you. With topics so intimate, it’s hard not to get addicted to this podcast.

Savage Lovecast

Dan Savage has changed the way we talk about sex, gay rights, religion, and so many other subjects. He started this podcast in 1996 (were people even listening to podcasts back then?!) and it has only grown from there, with a huge following around the country. This is a sex advice podcast, with people calling in for Dan’s signature witty, no-bullshit advice on how to deal with things like asking an ex for money, when to leave a one-night stand, or how to properly execute a three-way.

Guys We Fucked

Their tagline is “the anti-slut shaming podcast” and Corinne Fisher and Krystyna Hutchinson are making good on their promise by providing a safe, fun and hilarious space for women to take pride in their sexuality. The two stand-up comedians bring former sex partners on the show to talk about their experiences, whether it was a one-night stand or a year-long relationship. This serves as a great launchpad for listener interactions and other guests who share their personal stories or advice.

Love + Radio

This is truly one of my favorites. Nick van der Kolk weaves together complex, emotional portraits of people who have some of the most unique stories you’ve ever heard. A woman who gets paid to sit on balloons for the sake of fetish, a professional cyclist turned bank robber, or an assortment of characters found at 3 a.m. on a phone sex hotline.

Menage A Trois

Diana Kolsky and Murf Meyer are two hilarious New York-based comedians that also happen to be married, or in their words, “lovers.” The two interview a new guest each week, including comedy greats like Chris Gethard, Amy Poehler and Bridget Everett, to talk about love, sex, and the ways life makes them horny (or doesn’t). Bonus points if you live in NYC and can catch one of their monthly live events.
