It’s always good to have couple of tricks up your sleeve. When designing your house these this will play a big role in your deisgn since they are taking a lot of your space and stand out!

1. Replacing Original Windows
Replacing your historic windows will affect the look of your house but it wont solve the problem. Replacing windows is often not cost effective as well. Windows in buildings built before World War II are generally made of old-growth wood and can last indefinitely with proper maintenance and repair. New windows will last less the your old historic windows. You can rebuild your original windows and add appropriate storm windows to improve the energy efficiency of your windows. Although repairing and rebuilding original wood windows takes some expense and time, you will get a better payback for your investment than wholesale window replacement.

2. Paint Kitchen Cabinets
You can make a huge difference to the look of your kitchen with some simple renovations to the cabinets. By repainting doors and updating the handles, you’ll refresh the heart of your home without the need for a full redesign. If you find it easier, use a screwdriver to remove your cabinet doors, drawer fronts, hinges and handles, and move them to your work space. If you are replacing handles, take your old ones with you to the hardware store to ensure that you choose something with the same-size fittings. If you have a number of cabinet doors to remove, label them on the back so that you can easily find the right place for the right door when you have finished. If your cabinet doors and drawer fronts do not completely cover the front of the cabinets, you can prepare and paint those surfaces in the same way. A good time to do this is while the cabinet doors are drying.
To save time, buy a combined undercoat and primer and eliminate one of the stages.

3. Consider Various Carpet Styles

Carpet comes in many styles, including plush, Saxony, Berber, textured and frieze. These terms apply to its pile, which is the surface you see, created from yarn tufts that are either folded over into loops, cut straight across or both. While each style has a distinctive look, that shouldn’t be your main consideration. Instead, look at how well your lifestyle meshes with a particular carpet style. Plush carpeting, for example, is made from tightly twisted pile, and is thick, soft and inviting.

4. Choosing the paint color for your walls

If you are not sure about the color you should start small. Choose small part of your home and start painting from there. Think about your mood and how do you want to feel when you enter the room. Each color represent the certain mood, so start from there. Lightning also plays the important roll when choosing the color. Have in mind that natural daylight shows the truest color.

5. Upholstery fabric

The fabric of an upholstered piece is the most visible sign of quality and style. Upholstery fabric also is the part most likely to show wear and soil. When choosing upholstery, you should be aware of its durability, cleanability, and resistance to soil and fading.
There is a wide range of fabric that can be used for upholstery. They generally fall into two categories: natural fabrics and synthetics. When purchasing upholstery fabric or upholstered furniture, be aware that the higher the thread count, the more tightly woven the fabric is, and the better it will wear. Thread count refers to the number of threads per square inch of fabric.
