Storyboarding is an important aspect of the video process. It allows you to nail down your ideas and get feedback before you start actually putting effort into making the video.

An animated marketing video needs to make the company’s message known while being interesting. When storyboarding, you will need to be creative within certain requirements.

To this end, I recommend two steps:

  1. Get this information and put it into a table:
  • Brand logo
  • Brand color palette – get the HEX codes
  • What are they generally trying to promote?
  • What are they trying to promote with this video?
  • If there are speakers that will play in the video, get their names and titles. Be careful with spelling. You can also use this info in your research.
  • Specific dates that need to be displayed
  • CTA

2. Use a pencil and paper to sketch some ideas.

  • Take a break from the screen and give yourself some time to be creative.

Once you have some ideas, open Adobe Illustrator. Draw simple versions of your ideas.

Export screenshots of these ideas and put them in a Google slideshow.

Turn it to comment only and share with the client. Once they’ve given feedback, do everything you can to incorporate it. Making it so that they are able to reach their marketing goals by using your product is of UPMOST IMPORTANCE.

When you’re wrapping up the entire project, the storyboard can be a great element to include in a case study. You can show how the storyboard evolved and how easy it was for your clients to get a video they were super happy with.
