I struggle to read this.

Abigail criticizes the so-called “sophisticated,” but yet hasn’t herself the sophistication to read into why Velour behaves as she does (e.g., that Illinois comment).

There’s serious vitriol, but no curiosity.

This criticism really just reminds me of what would be the writing of second semester aspiring English major at Oberlin who struggles to allow her writing to break free from her ink-bled tear-drenched diary entries, as she reaches toward self-awareness and, even if for a few moments, awareness of and empathy toward others.
