Why do I like photography
To observe and record, not only the world, but also myself
It is interesting how different people take different pictures at the same time and place. People notice and care about different things, because who they are, not what the world is like.
Sometimes, it is a burden to carry a camera, because I would like to capture everything. But on the other hand, the desire to capture things is the motivation that drives me out of my room and to the outside.
I like to keep souvenirs. But deep down I know that it is the memories that the souvenirs represents that matters. It is not sad that when I still remember a sene but have nothing to represent it. But it is sad if I see a souvenir but have no idea what it represents for. I collect things, I don’t throw away the past. But I don’t go so far as obsessive and understand that I should let things go, at least the souvenirs, because I can’t really control the momerios.
Taking pictures has two meanings for me. One is to record. I capture moments of my family, my friends, passers-by, and the world around me. The other is to observe, I notice this in this way and other notice something else in another way. The difference is fascinating and opens a new door for me to understand others, understand the world, and most importantly, understand myself.
And there is a third little thing, which would explain why I like DSLR rather than DC. I like the convenience of quick control. The bottons that allow me to assign parameters makes me feel powerful and satisfying. That’s why I only feel more passinoate about photography after getting a DSLR and would not change to a mirror-less camera, however light it is.
