You may have heard of it, but I’ll mention it anyways: Solomon Asch conducted a number of psychological experiments in the late 1900's that demonstrated the effect that a group has on an individual, and how that individual can be swayed by the group. This does a good job explaining what he did. You may want to check them out; it could be good material for another essay.
