Why DOTA2’s Meta Resets Every Patch
A common joke in competitive DOTA2 involves the swapping of the winner of its largest tournament, The International, between Western teams and the Chinese. Since the first iteration nearly 7 years ago, every even numbered TI has been won by the Chinese, whereas the odd ones have gone to the West. Furthermore, no one team has won TI more than once. Why is this? Outside of the major 7.00 patch, DOTA2’s gameplay has stayed remarkably consistent in these past few years. Yet it seems that with every patch, the pecking order of the top teams gets reset.
To understand this phenomenon requires a bit of background. First of all, let me state that this is fairly advanced DOTA2 theory. To be fair, you have to have a very high MMR to understand EPG’s drafts. The davai is extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of theoretical pidoras most of the drafts will go over a typical 3k shitter’s head. There’s also EPG’s limited drafting ability, which is deftly woven into the heroes they choose for Lizzard- his heroes draw heavily from one trick pony drafts. Their fans understand this stuff; they have the MMR to truly appreciate Fey mirana, to realise that they’re not just boring- they say something deep about Slavic LIFE. As a consequence people who dislike EPG drafts truly ARE idiots- of course they wouldn’t appreciate, for instance, the humour in Lizzard’s Lich which itself is a cryptic reference to the coldness of Bosnian winters. I’m smirking right now just imagining one of those pidors scratching their heads in confusion as Mitch’s genius draft unravels as EPG loses to Illidan stack yet again. What fools. how I pity them.
You see, I have a very high MMR. Do you want to know why? Well, I’ll tell you anyways, I have a high MMR because I watch this amazing stream (which to my surprise piqued my interest unlike many other streams) LizZarddota2. This stream is remarkably davai (Like me, mind you) and not like any other pleb stream. My most favorite joke from the stream is “FUCK LAMP” it makes me giddy inside and knowing the common twitch user wont understand the joke makes me laugh even harder!
