The Entrepreneur 11 (My dream team)

Attention : Football Geek Alert! (No, it’s not about football)

Amazon Prime recently launched a TV Series ‘All or Nothing’ featuring Manchester City’s entire season 2017–2018 with Pep Guardiola, the Manager as one of staggering personalities in the style of his leadership and on-ground/off-ground speeches.

City ended up winning the English Premier league under his leadership and guidance and that fascinated me very much on the importance of Leadership and coaching as an entrepreneur. The TV series has been an absolute source of inspiration for me personally.

Pep’s style is all about quick, incisive football that ultimately becomes too difficult for the opposition to handle. Pep encourages his teams to start attacks from the back. It’s all about short passing and movement to create options for the player in possession.

As much as I thought about it, I tried to draw my own learnings from a 8 episode long series. I figured everyone is playing the same game, just formations differ.

I tried to draw an analogy of Football & Business Entrepreneurship through his coaching style and his catchy phrases. Above is painted image for the same.

The pre-match speech:

Pep Guardiola

The Pep way — ‘ Ofcourse I am going to defend you until the last day of my life in the press conference, but here I am going to tell you the truth’

The learning — The manager who doesn’t stand for his team for the outside world, doesn’t deserve to be one!

Pep on the most important factor for playing

Pep Guardiola on being courageous

The Pep way — ‘“I know it is difficult guys, I know because you want to win. I know, but you have to learn how to play football with courage,”

The learning — Courage is how we have come so far, courage is how we all are connected as a team. We have experimented far enough, taken risks and failed and failed and succeeded, that’s how we all win.

On Benjamin Mendy’s injury :

Benjamin Mendy injured during his 17–18 season

The documentary shows first-hand footage of Mendy’s diagnosis in Barcelona, where he is dealt a devastating blow as he is told he has ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee.

Pep — “It’s a shame that he’s going through all of that, having just arrived at the club. You always have plans, but whether or not you can stick to that plan is not your choice”

The learning — You fall, you will fall, believe it or not. There will be physical, emotional & mental injuries. Your plans won’t work either. How you bounce back is important.

On Backroom staff:

Brandon Ashton and Fabian Delph

More often than not, it is the backroom staff taking care of the behind-the-scenes logistics at a football club who can really make a difference.

“Kitman Brandon Ashton is clearly among those at City. He is seen joking around with the players on the training ground, and dancing on a massage table with his arms waving.”

The Learning — It is extremely important to acknowledge the backroom staff, the one who is serving you good food. The one’s who are making sure your things are in place. The ones who makes sure you have your clothes on time. The ones who makes sure people at work should do things that they are good at and not waste time doing daily chores.

On playing with their strongest contender (Liverpool):

Sadio Mane & Mohamed Salah (Liverpool)

While playing with the magnets on the board, Pep explains Liverpool’s attacking style and speed of players stating — ‘Good afternoon guys. Today I’m going to explain what they do in attack. It’s a team who is so good at running behind, Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah are so fast. Try to close the channel. Even when the full-back has to go, try and make the movement.”

The Learning — ‘Read-Read-Read about where you are going, who you are meeting, whom you are facing, why you are facing’ Have clarity in your head about your competition, about your clients & most importantly about yourself (how deep can you go) for the big war!

On Letdowns

Pep Guardiola unhappy about his teams performance.

Pep — “Some of you play better when you’re angry with me, so if you hate me, HATE ME guys! No problem at all, but every single training session, every single game, you have to be there, ready. Even if you lose, you know you did your best’.

Pep — “Often when I don’t know something, I act in front of the players as if I do. I do it so they believe I have the answers and that gives them the confidence to play. Sometimes they ask you about things in life, and then you must adopt the role of a father, brother and son.”

The learnings — Giving 100% is extremely important. Company goals are fulfilled when every individual gives their 100% and makes sure of standing by it. You might not like everything about your manager or your team mates, but that is what makes you different. Working as a team is important, work as one does.

On Closing the season

City broke several records in 2017–18, including reaching 100 points, winning 32 matches and scoring 106 goals.

Among their most important victories was an early triumph at defending champions Chelsea.

Guardiola says: “The greats are capable of going anywhere, and making the other team think, from the first minute, ‘these guys have come here to win’.

The learning — “Play your A game, every single time, it scares the shit of other person trying to get to you”

Pep Demonstrates his final words saying — “ The best thing about our season is that it doesn’t matter where we were, because we play with character and courage. If you become a top, top, top, top, top team, you have to score the goals guys.”
