I think when a child is diagnosed with ADHD Parents should interpret that as “your child is incredibly gifted”. We need to get rid of that awful name. Its deceptive. Its not a deficit of attention at all. If anything its a difficulty in regulating attention. If the medical/psychiatric community insists on labeling it a disorder, they could at least describe it more accurately as Attention Regulation Disorder. As for medications like Adderall and Vyvanse. They can really help if used properly. Medication should be used as part of an overall coping strategy instead of being expected to be a cure all. Above all else though its important to spend time and energy building on a person’s strengths rather than constantly trying to patch their weaknesses. This is especially true of those with ADHD.
