Southfields Academy in South London hosted a visit by the Executive Director of Mosaic’s Platinum Patrons, the Al Faisal Without Borders Foundation, showcasing a fantastic group mentoring session delivered by Mosaic mentors.

Mosaic has worked with Southfields Academy for the last four years, delivering the Enterprise Challenge and the secondary group mentoring programme.

The mentoring session for a group of Year 10 students was focused on career aspirations and understanding individual strengths. The mentors worked with the young people to identify and explain the positive qualities that they could highlight to potential employers, building their confidence and presentation skills.

The students also learned from the mentors — who were drawn from a range of sectors including technology, business, education, management consultancy and the law — about what they had liked at school, how they had succeeded in the careers and what motivated them.

Ali Mar’e of the Foundation then had the opportunity to meet a group of Year 13 students of Southfields Academy who had participated in Mosaic programmes in previous years and who were now looking forward to bright futures at a range of leading universities.

The students included members of Team Core, the winning team in the Enterprise Challenge 2011. The former mentees spoke eloquently about how the Mosaic programme had boosted their confidence and aspirations.

The school staff noted how those students who have participated on the Mosaic mentoring programmes had become very active members of the school community, acting as peer mentors to those lower down the school, leading social action projects and thriving in their studies.

Jonathan Freeman, Managing Director of Mosaic, commented:

“It was a real privilege to be a part of this fantastic mentoring session, led by an amazing group of volunteers who are clearly having a hugely positive impact on the students involved in our programme. Our guests were very impressed with the commitment of the school to the programmes, the professionalism of the volunteer mentors and the enthusiasm of the young people involved.”
