Things around me 1:00AM, Friday 6 June
A Coke Zero can with the cap pulled off, now clenched between my furry, unbrushed teeth. A mandarin peel. One of my favourite tea cups; the interior white, the exterior covered in some version Van Gogh’s sunflowers. Too many TV remotes I’m not sure how to work. The gas heater… the artifical logs inside did let off a vibrant orange glow, that of a sunset, until the dark became overwhelming and I turned the lights on. My iPhone. I’ve been too careless to replace the case, however the screen has cracked a little more and so the screen is littered with small grey bubbles as if a liquid lay underneath the glassy surface. A DVD I attempted to watch — The Curious Case of Benjamin Button — until my mind inevitably wandered to more pressing issues. A bright highlighter-yellow acrylic beanie. Dirty black Nikes with a red tick and similarly highlighter-yellow soles. Two exhausted AA batteries sitting on top of my family’s decade-old, faded blue, ex-cookie tin sewing kit.
All of this makes me feel seventeen again. Like a lost, unsure teenager stuck in this small country town. I want to get back to the city.
