What scientists and engineers are designing at ESA right now.

Humanity will come back to the moon. This time to stay.

For sure, establishing a lunar colony is among the mid-term (yes: not long-term) goals of many public and private agencies of the world. But in parallel to this, the scientific exploration through unmanned rovers is to continue and will not stop with humans coming back. For this reason this is the right time to reinforce this commitment, and it is just what engineers and scientists are doing nowadays at ESA.

Meeting the need for geological exploration, lunar caves will be great safe homes options for future human explores. Building upon ESA Discovery’s OSIP call and SysNova challenge, experts have been gathered to design a mission to enter a pit on the Moon’s surface and explore the entrance to a lunar cave.

As ESA reports on its official website:

«Whilst the Moon’s barren surface has been well-documented by orbital spacecraft, subsurface cavities remain a mystery but could be vital in our future exploration of the Moon. Not only could they provide shelter for human visitors — shielding astronauts from radiation and micrometeorites, they may also provide access to icy water and other resources trapped underground».
