Rest is For the Strong

Because if you don’t rest well, you won’t do anything well.

“I’ll Rest When I’m Dead”

I have no idea who originally coined this phrase, and I can’t help but shake my head when I hear someone say it or see it written somewhere. I mean, really? For some people though (too many, I’m afraid), this is a way of life. A norm. It’s almost a point of pride to brag about how many things we have going on as if there’s some award for being the busiest, most frazzled person in the room. Friend, let me ask you — why is this the case?

Is That Really Necessary?

Why do we even need rest, anyway? To begin with the obvious, rest is your body’s way of processing what it’s been through and regrouping in a way that allows you to more efficiently handle similar situations in the future. It’s a way of maintaining homeostasis by being able to adapt to the stress and demands you put your body through daily.

Think about this — if you were to look at any successful athlete’s training schedule, there’s one thing that every single one of them will have in common. Every one of them will have a rest day figured in (of course, there are those who think they can “power through” without resting their bodies, but that will be short-lived for them. Just give it time)…
