In the first episode of “Grey’s Anatomy”, a TV show created by Shonda Rhimes, surgical intern and prodigy Meredith Grey is going through her first shift of work at Seattle Grace Hospital. Meredith is the daughter of Doctor Ellis Grey, a phenomenal general surgeon and now she must prove to her mother and to everyone else that she has what it takes to become an amazing surgeon like her mother. Meredith gets put with four other surgical interns named Alex, Izzie, George, and Cristina and they are all led by a resident named Miranda Bailey. The other people in her group are her competition and she must quickly grow up and face the reality that in order to succeed in the surgical residency program she must be extremely competitive. Meredith goes through the normal anxieties of being in a new place and also doing a new job while also feeling immense pressure to prove to herself that she can succeed in the surgical residency program. She has to become an adult and realize that she is no longer a medical student but a surgical intern who has a real job with responsibilities to deal with. This episode of “Grey’s Anatomy” is very relevant to what young adults deal with today as they go through college and graduate school. Students are under immense pressure from their parents and also put pressure on themselves to perform well and get a job when they graduate. It is also relevant because when students do graduate the competition to find a job they have to become adults and look out for themselves.
