Title: The perfect book for helping deal with the pandemic.

Review: I began reading and writing poetry in earnest after I first encountered the poetry of Billy Collins, Tony Hoagland, Ted Kooser, Ed Hirsch, Charles Bukowski, Li-Young Lee, and Yusef Komunyakaa.

I own most of Collins’ books and when I need a breather from life or simply need inspiration for my own writing, I turn to poems like “The Best Cigarette” and “The Afterlife.”

As Collins says in his MasterClass, poetry is the history of the human heart, and that’s what I find in the “Whale Day” poems…the reflections of a gentleman’s heart.

Collins helps us contemplate our mortality and the tiny little world that surrounds us. This is where we can find peace, especially in light of the pandemic.

If you need a break from everything that is weighing you down, I recommend a cup of tea, a comfy chair, and “Whale Day.”

Title: Disappointing

Review: Another disappointing mail-it-in collection by a poet whose playfulness I used to love. The “I” in these poems is so loud and prominent, the reader is in danger of being spooked and taking refuge in whatever navel Collins is gazing into these days. Personal confessional poetry is one thing, but by the end, I wished Collins would dare to write a single verse that wasn’t somehow self-referential (and often cloying).

Review: I believe this is one of the best eclectic, intuitive, and communicative poetry books of the year. These poems are imaginative AND realistic, relevant AND whimsical, somber AND silly as only Collins can present. There’s simplicity in the complexities. I never sense the exact same story or feel the same emotion with each reread. Even my own imagination runs away with his verse, expanding on his themes, branching out from his topics, inspiring me to go on my own poetic journeys.

This is what Billy Collins does best. His superpowers are inspiration and crossover.

If you write poetry you might be inspired to be less obtuse, or write comprehensively, or pursue literary freedom, or simplify, or diversify, or just plain lighten up. It’s all a bunch of “or”s because Collins’ poems resonate differently and personally with everyone.

If you don’t write poetry but enjoy reading it, Collins’ poems might inspire you to write your very first. It’s been known to happen. He obviously believes people can learn to write poems. Just check out his Masterclass online course.*

The most intriguing part of Billy Collins’ poetry is that it’s so incredibly readable and relatable, his books usually crossover, winning the hearts and minds of readers who have no acquired taste for the genre or usually don’t “get” poetry.

If anyone could get more people to learn to love and read poetry, it’s Billy Collins. I don’t mean it’s commercialized in the usual negative connotation, although I do feel poetry’s classical anti-commercial and traditional literary forms have held this genre back in the worse way. What I mean is he writes about every day things and never-day things in the most interesting way.

Some of his poems are serious and heart-touched, the next poem hilarious, silly but absolutely relatable; the poem after that so imaginative and “out there” you can’t help but get caught up in a whimsical idea. He manages to pull this off with brilliant simplicity and without the usual “Bah! Humbugs” from readers when poets compose overly obtuse, imaginative concepts with too much complexity for complexity’s sake.

“Whale Day: And Other Poems” will crossover like most of his books. It will become another bestseller. His superpowers are just as strong as ever.

If you never read poetry or believe you do not like or understand the genre, I challenge you to read Billy Collins books. As an excellent addition to “Whale Day”, I highly recommend “The Trouble With Poetry: And Other Poems”, that still converts people into poetry readers on a regular basis:

There it is in the proverbial nutshell, “GOOD POETRY DOESN’T HAVE TO BE OBSCURE OR INCOMPREHENSIBLE, QUALITIES THAT ARE PERHAPS THE REAL TROUBLE WITH MOST ‘SERIOUS’ POETRY…”

Take a chance. Become enlightened. Feed your brain. Expand your horizons, etc., blah, blah. Forget all that cliche stuff and just read Billy Collins’ books. You might have an “Eureka” moment and finally “GET WHAT THIS POETRY THING IS ABOUT.”

Review: “Whale Days and Other Poems.” I’ve read and listened to Billy Collins periodically over the years, always admiring his offhanded approach to modern poetry. His appeal is wider than deep, in my estimation, and “Whale Days . . . “ follows a glibness that is pleasing more than philosophical. He is a perfect example of “everyone’s favorite poet.”

Review: Billy Collins is a favorite poet of mine anyway, but Whale Day did NOT disappoint!
His use of prose paints the most amazing pictures. The little surprise twists are whimsical. Truly a joy to read from cover to cover and then cover to cover again!
Certainly this will be a permanent addition to my poetry collection.

Review: I never miss a book by Billy Collins — he’s just a wonderful observer of the human condition and expresses it in poetry. “Walking My Seventy-Five Year Old Dog” and “Sleeping on My Side” alone are worth the price of admission. Might I also suggest you go online to find Collins reading his terrific “Best Cigarette” from a few years ago .. a poet reading his own work is a real art form.
