One of the most accessible mountain bike trails in Salt Lake City is the Bonneville Shoreline Trail. This series of trails runs along the Wasatch Mountains slope of what was once the shoreline of the ancient Lake Bonneville, which covered much of Utah around 15,500 years ago. There are sections along the trails that are suited even for beginners. This includes starting at The Natural History Museum of Utah, riding south, and taking an abbreviated loop close to the entrance of Emigration Canyon.

Another popular option is to start near Hogle Zoo, which features a challenging uphill climb. Then there are various trails along the way that may be worth exploring. Having a map of the area can be helpful in trying the different trails.

As this is an exposed trail, the recommended time to ride is early spring through late fall. You can enjoy superb views of Salt Lake City and the Great Salt Lake along the route.
