Steve Shives: Some Quick Thoughts
I’m a liberal. I’m a proud supporter of #blacklivesmatter. I detest the rise of Donald Trump as a conservative demagogue and fear for the future this country. I’m part of the “boogeyman” that the right fears. That rising tide of millennials who don’t subscribe to the same stale dogma that they continue to propagate. I should be a fan of Steve Shives, in fact, I’m subscribed to his YouTube channel. However, that status is in grave danger. While I may agree with the content of Steve’s arguments. His behavior on social media and his either weakness or unwillingness to combat alternate thought is worrying.
The way that Steve Shives presents himself in theory would allow crictism of his points. However, Steve refuses to rebuke dissent against himself. Rather he prevents himself from even being exposed to this dissent through blocking and what are called “block bots” which are services that block users of social media websites based on association with other “less savory” members of social media websites. Steve Shives has insulated himself from critique altogether through these blocks and this form of personal censorship. Does Steve believe that his points are that weak? Or has Steve created an demonic caricature of all that disagree with him? He seems to believe that all that disagree with him are the purest personification of evil.
If Steve Shives wants my, and any other thinking people to continue to subscribe to his channel and continue listening to him. He needs to grow a spine and combat those that disagree with him. He needs to be proactive in his beliefs. He needs to debate, to discuss, to fight. Instead of putting up virtual barriers and isolating himself from critique.
