Project 366 / 309 — What defines you?

What defines you? What makes you who you are?

I like to think who you are is how you act and behave when no one is watching. After all it’s easy to put on a front, a face and a persona when you’re being watched. 100% of us do that. Think about it, you’re one person at home, another version of yourself at work and another version when you’re out with the boys (or girls). We all act differently based on the circumstances and environment that we find ourselves in. But how do you act when no one is watching?

There’s also two other main things that define our personality; the way you manage things when you have nothing and the way you behave when you have everything.

We are all constantly changing, that’s a given. We’re evolving, we’re being influenced, we’re learning and we’re growing. As a result we’re all changing. That’s a big reason why so many people come into and leave our lives. It’s also a big reason why people drift apart.

It’s interesting to see people’s behaviour too, especially when it comes down to money and success. I’ve seen a lot of people who have struggled on the way up (don’t we all), making friends and helping each other along the way, only to change when they reach what they perceive to be the top. It’s not the top, it’s just their perception of success and in fact it’s far from the financial safety of the top. They reach this point in their journey only to turn away from those who helped them, snubbing them as if they are in a different league.

I’ve experienced this first hand and I was a bit shocked by their behaviour. But the fall from grace came thick and fast and our paths crossed again. As the saying goes — “be careful how you treat people on the way up because you might meet them again on the way down.”

I don’t really hold grudges — I forgive but I don’t forget so this was a lesson to me to stay humble, be grateful and to keep striving. Time has a habit of passing very quickly and money comes and goes fast.

One day you’re drinking the champagne, the next day you could be picking the grapes.
