An honest opinion

My reaction post the release of the much awaited season of GoT- Not a review.

The famed iron throne- GoT. You obviously know it. Why am I even describing it?

Allow me to come out straight with this.

I haven’t watched Game of Thrones that much and that doesn’t bother me in the slightest. Period.

After the third season, I never really got hooked onto that mega TV series, unlike the others. As much as I respect the work put in by all the actors (including those who played by the sidelines) as well as the entire production crew, I never really got myself fully involved in the ‘monumental’ series. At this point, you are probably grumbling that the actual story line only starts after the third season. I can see you nodding in disapproval conveying a feeling of hopelessness. The fact though, is this- I can literally imagine a scenario where I am stripped naked and made to walk on cobbled streets, with a huge crowd shouting “shame, shame”. Just for saying that I am not a fan of GoT. Just for that.

After three whole seasons and around thirty episodes, I still recoil to other series that I cherish and hold a special place in my heart. Somehow, I fail to share the same rapport that I do with the others. While it was love at first sight for the others, the status for GoT is still “complicated”. It isn’t that I refuse to go with the crowd, but I believe that the ‘magic’ has simply failed to work on me. I hope that I am not the only one (Raise your hands if you are on the same boat as I am. Also, we are NOT forming a club or a union. Pity).

In my personal opinion, I feel that the entire series is over-hyped.

There, I said it. Now, I have to cower and find a shelter quickly, lest the fanboys and girls pounce upon me and tear every inch of flesh I have (trust me, I am slightly chubby in the middle. Slightly). The crowd is that maddening. People are going bonkers over the newly released season. I am not saying that it is wrong to become super excited about something; You are after all indirectly appreciating the work of all the artists and I love that. All I am saying is, slow down!

Judging people on its own is bad. Judging people at the drop of a hat and isolating him/her for not having watched the latest episode is worse, nay demoralizing.

This isn’t how a society should work. Definitely not based on a TV series. Agreed, that the entire production team are doing one heck of a job. Kudos to them on a commendable job performed so far. The technicalities of the series are brilliant. I mean no offence to any of them.

Call me old fashioned, an old timer or a bloke with zero fun in his life, but in the end, it comes down to this. Just don’t let it overwhelm your life.

Your life is worth more than a TV series. It’s worth more than inundating it with the convoluted plot lines and the unforeseen character deaths (or is it expected? Has it become cliched now? I’ll never know).

Point number one that I would like to make now is this- Binge watching isn’t wrong, but shouldn’t be done at the cost of productivity. Point number two. This isn’t a benchmark. Don’t rate people on whether they appreciate something or not. Opinions differ and they should. That is why they are called opinions or viewpoints. The magic may work for some, while for the others (myself included) it takes time.

Maybe it’s the hype created that has made me lose interest so quickly and easily. I confess that I am someone who refuses to do something just because it is being followed by a crowd. I put up my best fight into knowing what attracts people to it like flies to fruits. I try to handpick the best possible reason on why something should be done the way it should be and only then do it. If there is another way that people have failed to take notice, I pounce upon that and begin working from there. Protocols, rules and procedures at a workplace are a different thing entirely, because they are almost always proven ways for efficient outcome. You have to follow them no matter what. The situation at hand however, is different. In the end, I would like to stress upon this one phrase- Slow down. Relax. It is after all just a TV series.

This write-up merely mirrors my viewpoint. Let me know what you think about this in the comments below. All I wanted to do was to voice out my thoughts.
