When you translate someone who died in the year 1900 from German to English, you don’t translate “du” to “thou”, unless you’re
1. translating on behalf of someone who has time-traveled from the 15th century, or
2. you are trying to go all biblical and give your quote false gravitas/importance in oh-such an obviously pretentious way:
“And if you gaze long into an abyss, the abyss will also gaze into you.”
