My first weekly notes - a week late, not a fabulous start!

Anyway, here they are :)

  • Started a new job at an Edtech startup in London called MyTutor.
  • After six months away from work, getting back into the routine was difficult — it was an immediate loss of freedom and flexibility.
  • Met the team and everyone is friendly.
  • Lots of people from all parts of the business have wondered over to say “Hello”, which was welcoming.
  • Learnt about history of the company and was particularly interested in how we use the platform to help improve social mobility of underprivileged children via relationships with schools.
  • Straight into the deep end —the engineering team’s key goal now is to take ownership of the code base from the external agency that developed it over the last several years.
  • First impressions of the code quality is IMO quite poor — zero developer tests, little design thought and not enough continuous refactoring. I understand the context this has come out of and that it got the company this far, but nevertheless changing it towards a sustainable approach for the future is going to be hard work.
  • Spent much of the week using DDD to do some strategic domain modelling and mapping with the team, with the view to defining a pathway to incrementally taking on ownership. People have appreciated me sharing my knowledge on this area, explaining why we are doing it and sharing various articles/books to help people get familiar.
  • Feels nice to have a permanent desk again!
  • First week cold has made things more stressful than needed — having much to say but no voice to say it is annoying! Note to future self: don’t start a new job during cold/flu season.
  • I knew it would happen, but being back in work has broken my regular gym routine. Finding quiet times at gym outside of work hours is impossible — the work from home day will eventually help.
