In addition to democratizing propoganda the Internet and social media have democratized information flow and exchange of independent thought and reflection, so it’s not all bad ☺. Yes radical Islamic terrorism account for only tiny fraction of all homicides in the West but they are driven by a single ideology that is shared by hundreds of millions Muslims worldwide (if I remember correctly the most conservative estimate by Gallup Poll after 9/11 was 7% of all Muslims worldwide, while more recent Pew report suggests it is higher at 15-25%), and this same ideology is also disconcerting similar to those with influential political ties with the US. In addition to all the great points you raise, we should also consider the possibility that in some cases certain media outlets may have a vested interest in downplaying rational fears of legimate threats.
