Roger McBride cast a rogue libertarian vote in the electoral college in 1972; few wanted that to be repeated. Just imagine a rogue vote in 2008 and the howls that would have erupted. No, it’s probably best that the electors are required to honor the citizen vote. Nowadays citizens have all the means at their fingertips to inform themselves more thoroughly than our ancestors could have hoped, so there’s really no justification for a special elite second guessing the people. And Oy! can you imagine the corruption if bribes and offers were used to bend the electors’ votes? Yes, illegal, but there are very creative ways to hide it now. Let’s keep the electoral college as it is, and continue the republican revolution by extending the concept down to state elections.
