Derrick Rose is the most overrated player in the NBA

Derrick Rose started his career better than nearly any player has ever done so in NBA history.

After just one season at the University of Memphis, Rose exploded on to the scene at 20 years old. In his rookie season, Rose averaged 16.8 points per game, six assists and 3.9 rebounds. His impressive numbers earned him the 2008–2009 NBA Rookie of The Year trophy.

Rose’s dominance did not stop there early on. By his third season in the league the Chicago-native was named the NBA MVP by averaging 25 points, 7.7 assists and a steal per game. Rose is the youngest player to ever win the honor at just 22 years old.

Things were never the same, however.

Rose has yet to come close to playing a full season since his MVP year.

In his first three seasons combined Rose missed just six games total. However in the last five seasons, Rose has missed 228 games, far more than any other player in the league.

If a player cannot even stay on the court then they obviously can’t make a difference for their team. This was evident as the Bulls were never able to get past the second round of the playoffs during Rose’s time being injured.

Obviously the injuries are probably not his fault, but it doesn’t change the fact that he is still overrated in this day and age. Basketball fans still hold rose in high regard as if he is his 22-year-old self still, when we know that is absolutely false.

Rose has undergone multiple knee surgeries and has even suffered from vertigo in recent seasons likely due to head injuries.

The now 28-year-old Rose has not averaged more than 17.7 points or 4.9 assists in the last five seasons. Those numbers are not bad, but they do not garner any kind of super star — or even star — recognition.

Despite his mediocre numbers and inability to stay on the court, the New York Knicks traded a draft pick and three players for the banged up point guard. To top if off, Rose is scheduled to make over $21 million dollars in the 2016–17 season.

To conclude, Rose is not overrated because of his own doing. He became a big name when he emerged on the scene and achieved a large amount of success early in his career. Clearly media and fans still believe that his name still holds weight, but I doubt any opposing teams are game planning on how to beat the Knicks because of Rose.
