Arlington Renegades Seized The XFL Championship 2023
In a thrilling XFL championship game on Saturday, the Arlington Renegades secured a 35–26 victory over the D.C. Defenders to become the 2023 XFL champions.
Led by former Oklahoma head coach Bob Stoops, the Renegades were propelled to victory by the impressive performance of quarterback Luis Perez, who was named the game’s MVP. Perez threw for 288 yards, three touchdowns, and zero interceptions, repeatedly picking apart the Defenders’ defense.
The Renegades got off to a quick start with Perez finding Sal Cannella for a 41-yard touchdown pass on their opening drive. He then connected with a second touchdown pass to put Arlington up 14–0. While the Defenders did manage to score a touchdown just before halftime to narrow the deficit, Arlington added a field goal to take a 20–6 lead into the break.
The Defenders made a valiant effort to rally in the second half, putting up 20 points to make it a close game. However, they were ultimately unable to overcome the Renegades’ lead. With just over a minute remaining, the Defenders attempted to make one final push to tie the game. However, their hopes were dashed when Jordan Ta’amu’s fourth-down pass was intercepted by Cre’Von LeBlanc, securing the Renegades’ victory.
Ta’amu, who was named the 2023 XFL Offensive Player of the Year, was held in check by the Renegades’ defense. He completed just 16 of his 30 pass attempts for 245 yards, with two touchdowns and three interceptions.
The victory marks the first XFL championship for the Renegades, who were founded just three years ago. The team’s success can be attributed to Stoops’ coaching and Perez’s impressive play at quarterback, as well as a strong team effort throughout the season.
