The 2023–24 NBA season for veteran center Steven Adams has come to an abrupt halt before it even began, as the Memphis Grizzlies announced that he will undergo surgery on his right knee. This setback appears to be linked to the knee troubles that sidelined Adams in January, causing him to miss the latter half of the previous season along with the playoffs.

Preseason Performance:

Despite Adams’ return for a pair of preseason games, where he showed promise with nine points, 10 rebounds, and two blocks over 27 minutes on the court, his status for the regular season seemed secure. It was anticipated that he might have a gradual transition back into the rotation, potentially causing him to miss a few games at the outset.

Impact on the Grizzlies:

With Adams and Brandon Clarke, who is still in rehabilitation from a torn Achilles, both out of commission, the Grizzlies’ frontcourt is grappling with the absence of two key players. While Jaren Jackson Jr. holds the title of reigning Defensive Player of the Year, the burden on him to anchor the defense is substantial.

Performance Discrepancy:

Memphis’ performance was undeniably affected following Adams’ injury last season. With Adams in the lineup, the team excelled, ranking second in offensive rebounding rate (33.8 percent) and overall rebounding (52.6 percent), according to NBA.com. However, from January 23 onwards, those numbers plummeted to 22nd (26.0 percent) and 25th (48.1 percent) respectively.

The Defensive Challenge:

The absence of Adams also left a noticeable void in the defense, as the Los Angeles Lakers managed to shoot an impressive 46.3 percent from the floor in the first round against the Grizzlies.

The Rise of Xavier Tillman:

With Adams on the sidelines, the spotlight now falls on fourth-year center Xavier Tillman. The question arises whether he can step up as an adequate replacement for Adams and contribute to Memphis’s pursuit of lofty expectations for the season.
