How to be safe out there

One of the nuisances of getting involved in digital currencies, is having to be even more aware of security. More than ever, hackers and scammers have an incentive to penetrate websites, computers and phones.

Even your friends or unknowns can simply pull a prank on you when you’re being careless. Unfortunately, that’s what happened to one of our younger team members, who left his phone lying around, while logged into his social media accounts. One, or possibly more, troubling messages appeared on internet forums, under his identity. That’s not okay.

On the plus side, there was no sensitive data on his phone, so Spotcoin’s security was never in danger. Also, we abide by security protocols. However, his slip-up was a warning to all of us. And a good cue to share some pointers about security routines. It’s all about the door, figuratively.

Lock the door

· Use Token Two-Factor Authentication. For example, the combination of an online password together with Google Authenticator on your phone, or a password protected physical ledger wallet with your private seed stored safely

· Use complex passwords and routinely change them. Consider using a paid password vault service, rather than writing all of them down

· Make sure your browser, firewall, operating system (OS), and apps are up to date

When going outdoors, be careful

· Avoid using public Wi-Fi hotspots that are vulnerable to hacking

· Check the links and URLs for correct spelling

· Check that site URLs are secure, starting with https://

· Look for a green lock symbol next to the URL in your browser bar

· Avoid getting into fights with people online. They could come back and try to hack your accounts out of spite

· Turn off geo-tagging on your photos and videos

· Avoid offers that are too good to be true. They’re not true

· Double-check wallet addresses with recipients before you send money to them. Hackers may have changed them

Don’t open the door to strangers

· Beware of phishing mails

· Only download applications from trusted sources

· Don’t provide your personal info to strangers

· Know who you’re communicating with on the other end and have a method to authenticate who they are

· Check whether admins in Telegram groups are really admins. There are plenty of impostors roaming the communities.

· Beware of copycat accounts or sites

If you have any security questions, you can always reach us via webcare chat on spotcoin.com. Or ask our admins in the Telegram group — the ones with admin next to their name all the way to the right. Check in the pinned note to be sure.

Spotcoin admins will never ask you to transfer funds or to share your private key. If that happens, capture a screen shot and report the chat to a real admin. Then slam the door.
