In the function buildMessage I don’t see where the function quotedValue is used. I’m thinking the code should read like this:

buildMessage message value =
upperMessage =
String.toUpper message
        quotedValue =
"'" ++ value "'"
upperMessage ++ ": " ++ quotedValue
