The Shift

Going into our third career fair in the last 10 days, it’s clear that the way students are thinking about the job market is changing.

The shift is happening. College students are finally fighting the pressure to conform to the accepted, cookie-cutter career path. Where major corporations once dominated the scene, startups are finding their niche, stealing some of the spotlight.

Today is the Startup Career Fair at Harvard University, an opportunity that most other colleges don’t provide for their students. And while Harvard is ahead of the curve, that doesn’t mean that students on other campuses aren’t ready for the shift. They just need the resources and guidance to lead them in the right direction. We were at Northeastern University yesterday and were overwhelmed by the overall interest is startups.

SquadUP has received an impressive amount of attention at our recent career fairs and it isn’t because we’ve become a household name overnight. It’s because students are looking for a company that they can work hard for and see the direct impact of their hours. They want to be a part of a company culture with the perfect balance of being laid back when appropriate yet always hungry for more. They want to innovate, create, build, and they want to do it quickly. Sure, it doesn’t hurt that our Brand Ambassador Program is over 350 strong on nearly 100 campuses. But we wouldn’t have nearly the same draw if this were 10 or even 5 years ago. The startup scene is hitting that sweetspot between mainstream acceptance and in-the-know cool. Silicon Alley has cemented itself as a hub for innovation and there are many other cities following suit. Don’t miss out on the opportunity to be a part of one of the most exciting times in our country’s business history.
