To foster a greater and more engaged bitcoin design community, we are expanding our existing grant program to designers. Initial grants will last 6 months. Our hope is that all grant recipients will serve as stewards for the growing bitcoin design community.

Examples of design specific bitcoin projects we might support:

  • A bitcoin design guide that includes best practices for onboarding, private key management, payments, and more
  • A user research plan that helps address open questions in the design guide
  • Contributions to open-source projects such as Bitcoin Core, Bitcoin.org, BTCPay, Photon, CoinSwap, or Bisq

We encourage designers to join the…

Great design is essential to the adoption of new technologies. That’s what made it one of Square Crypto’s earliest considerations.

During our recent search for a unicorn designer, we spoke to dozens of talented UX researchers, visual designers, and systems designers. These conversations showed us what we could do for bitcoin’s growing but disconnected and underfunded design community. They also showed us what a single designer couldn’t do. So we’ve decided to support building a decentralized bitcoin design community instead of hiring one full-time designer.

Square Crypto will use our platform to direct talent to this community, but we won’t…

We support bitcoin by building developer toolkits, contributing to the Lightning Network and Bitcoin Core, and supplying grants that free up developers to work on bitcoin in their own way. To date, we’ve supplied grants to BTCPayServer and ZmnSCPxj. Today we’re awarding two more to Jon Atack and Tankred Hase, in addition to providing steps that could help your bitcoin project get funded by us.

If you don’t have the financial means to build financial freedom for others, a Square Crypto Grant could be what you need.

The rules:

  • Grants can be issued to a team or an individual working…

For bitcoin to become a widely used global currency — one that can’t be stopped, tampered with, or rigged in anyone’s favor — improvements to bitcoin’s UX, security, privacy, and scaling are required.

In open-source development, developers usually choose their own projects. Yet, because we are a consolidated team of open-source developers, we are in a strong position to coordinate on major projects that individuals may not have the time or resources to tackle.

With that in mind, we used the following criteria to ask ourselves what we should build to accelerate bitcoin adoption:

  • Will the project have an outsized…

Square Crypto was founded to improve and promote bitcoin, both through our own work and by supporting the work of others. In that spirit, today we’re announcing the first of what will be many grants to support open-source bitcoin projects.

This grant provides $100,000 to the BTCPay Foundation in support of BTCPay Server. It can be used by BTCPay to create anything, as long as it’s free and open-source software that improves the security, scalability, privacy, user experience, or fungibility of bitcoin — or all of the above.

BTCPay represents everything we love about open-source bitcoin projects. It exemplifies the…

Why just design a single company’s product when you can help design the future of money?

UPDATE: Please see our June 24, 2020 announcement regarding bitcoin design.

Bitcoin has demonstrated incredible resilience in its first 10 years largely due to its sophisticated technical design and passionate community. However, for Bitcoin to eventually become a daily-use currency with widespread adoption, there is a need to significantly improve the user experience, as echoed by Jack Dorsey when he announced Square Crypto.

Square Crypto is making Design part of our core, offering a unique opportunity for a designer to help shape the future…
