Picture it: you’re a business owner, sitting in your coach’s pleasantly decorated office. She’s professionally dressed for your get-to-know-each-other-chat. Friends of yours, also entrepreneurs, referred you to her and they swear by her services.

So far, she’s hit the nail right on the head: she gets it. She knows the problems you face and obviously has the solutions. You feel relaxed, like you’re in good hands, as she starts to talk about her process. “The first step is to make sure that you’re in the right mindset,” she says.

Which leads me to the question: do you run screaming out of her office, or do you mutter something about a sudden emergency instead as you flee? …

If you’re of a certain age (ahem) you might remember the old AT&T ads that urged us all to reach out and touch someone. Long-distance, because those kinds of calls cost more in the days of landlines. (Due to COVID-19, in 2020 we still need to keep the touches at a distance.)

A big part of life for humans is connection with other humans. Even introverts need a few relationships. We might not need bonds with as many people as extroverts typically do to be happy, but very few people are genuinely happy living as hermits.

And it’s especially important for business owners (yes, even introverts, hi!) to connect with other entrepreneurs. They don’t have to be in your industry, though that’s helpful too. But in any field you’ll find people who are struggling with the same things that you are. Things that your family or friends who don’t own businesses don’t get. …

Why do people become entrepreneurs? To run our own show, help as many other people as we can, get our message out there, showcase our brilliant ideas, make a living and more. But not least to lead a life we enjoy.

What kind of upgrade could you give your business if you committed to dependability and reliability in 2021?

Before this year, I didn’t understand why the old saying, “May you live in interesting times,” is considered a curse. I sure get it now!

Being an entrepreneur can get pretty difficult sometimes. That’s one of the reasons I advocate for having a squad with at least one of those members being an entrepreneur too. Someone who understands what you’re going through, because friends and family don’t always.
