I have always thought that “views” are the number of people who saw the post in their feed.

When I saw the above post, I emailed a request to yourfriends@medium.com regarding the exact meaning of “views” and got a different response. They said that “views” were the number of readers who clicked the post and went inside to read it. Not the number of readers who saw the post in the feed.

So, if a story is not getting many views, then it does not mean that readers are not seeing that story in their feed. It means that they are not willing to click the link and go inside to read it, for whatever reason.

This changes a lot of things. It means that writers have to concentrate more on title/subtitle-description/images to get users first interested to click the article. Then, they have to work on keeping the reader interested till the end.

This is great.

  1. First, this rewards the best posts and punishes even the little blemishes in any story.
  2. Articles written just for the sake of writing/everyday blogs will not crowd the readers feed.

Medium is truly working to get the best stories, the most audience.
