What’s it like to teach code?!

Learn, Teach, Learn

I can vaguely remember the first program that I wrote when I was 11 years old, but I can still remember the adrenaline rush that I felt that day when my program ran successfully.

Fast forward, 2 decades later… For almost a year, I have contemplated on checking out the code.org instructor workshop so that I can learn tricks to teach my son how to code. I finally registered and made it to the workshop last month. I met a group of passionate k12 teachers who have never coded and are learning code to bring it to their classes. The workshop was great and I immediately realized how much it’d be to teach my son all the things, but it’d be even more fun if I was able to teach larger group of kids, perhaps my son’s 1st grade class. The more kids I can teach the merrier, right?

The proposal to teach at school was very well received by the Parent Teacher Association, after all who wouldn’t want one or two STEM engineers to be born out of this program to create more jobs to boost US economy. So, here I am, finally getting a plan in place to teach my first lesson to a classroom of about 24 first graders and I can feel the same excitement as the day I felt when I wrote my first program.

I want to thank code.org for getting this program in place and evangelizing this at grassroots level and I am excited to contribute my 2 cents to this movement #code, #HourOfCode, @codeorg.

For those who are coders, here is the summary of what I am trying to get across

def teachCode(def thinkTeachingCodingIsFun, def workshop, def venue){
if(thinkTeachingCodingIsFun) {

/*To learn more about how much fun it’d be to teach, the website refers to teachers,
but you can be just be an interested volunteer and this is a fun workshop */
