Do You Play Live?
One of the world’s most powerful forces is feedback. That applies to people and companies, both.
In an organizational sense, I’d argue that the most powerful force of (organizational) physics is the feedback loop (person-to-person, function-to-function, and customer-to-company).
At a personal level, however, I’d argue that most people don’t do enough to seek feedback. Whether you’re honing a skill (playing music, or a sport, or writing) or improving your thinking, my strong recommendation remains:
Simply put, present your work to an audience. Put your music out there. Put your writing out there (This blog is one such attempt). Put your thinking out there. Get people talking about your work, and get people talking openly about your work.
While you do this, there are two things to stay extremely mindful about — and most of us aren’t good at this (if the long Facebook threads on my news feed are anything to go by):
- Staying Scientific. Assume you’re not fully right until proven otherwise. (i.e. if someone presents a counter viewpoint or says you’re totally wrong — stay open to the possibility)
- Staying agnostic the nature of feedback. Accept the good, the bad and the ugly — and then decide how you use it.
Hope this post helps kick-off a process of putting your skills/work out in the public domain (online or otherwise).
When in doubt, play live. Feedback will clear up the doubt.
P.S: Realized that ‘playing live’ isn’t common, after a friend sent me some fantastic stock analysis he’d done and documented, but never published. I urged him to do so and hone his analysis, so I could invest in stocks based on his published recommendations :-)
