This is my design journey of “Sleep Well” app. I followed this design process and created the app to complete my capstone project for the specialization “interaction design”.

Design Brief

The first step of the process is to choose a design brief. Three briefs were given Time, Change, and Glance out which I choose Change. So after this, I decided to create an app which can help people to change their sleep habits.

Need finding

After choosing the brief I observed three people out which 2 of them are my husband and brother whom I know very well. The main reason I chose this brief was to create an app which helps people (like my husband and brother)to fall asleep faster. I conducted an interview and asked them to walk me through their sleeping routine ( As I was unable to observe the participants directly in real time I only asked them to replay the events.)observed them for the break points and design opportunities.

I noticed all the participants like to stay up late and when they wanted to sleep they can’t fall a sleep faster. This was affecting their day time activities.

Ideation

After finding the breakdown points I needed to find out user needs through brainstorming. I created a high-level strategy(i.e Point of view(pov)) to create my app which is going to help people to fulfill their needs.

My point of view:

People these days are so addicted to their electronic devices that they are forgetting about other things. Usually, after a long day of work we relax to do so we use our electronic gadgets but after some time (even though we’re tired) we are so involved in those devices that we forget about time and then when we go to bed to sleep, we struggle to fall asleep. What if there is an app that tells people to go to bed and provides help to fall asleep or reminds them about next day’s important activity. This will help people to change and adjust their sleep routine and be more active all day.

Inspiration board:

Best sources that are an inspiration to my app are listed in this section. Clock (IOS), Sleep Cycle (IOS app), Sleep Cycle Power Nap, Pzizz(an android app), Sleep Genius(my favorite).

Prototyping

After finding the user needs it was time to created storyboards for 2 different ideas which are based on user needs. Based on the storyboard a prototype was also made.

Storyboard 1 & prototype 1

In this storyboard how the app reminds the user about his important activity the next day. The use was a busy young professional who relaxes after a long day of work by watching movies on his lap top.

For this storyboard, a paper prototype was made with main interaction screens.

Storyboard 2 & prototype 2

In this storyboard how the app helps the user fall asleep faster. The use was a busy new mon who need to wake up in between to feed her baby.

For this storyboard, a paper prototype was made with main interaction screens.

Heuristic evaluations

After creating the paper prototype it was to evaluate the prototype with heuristic evaluations with one of my classmates and got feedback on both the prototypes.

After the evaluations, I made the changes to the prototype based on the evaluation.

Wireframes

After the evaluation, I created the wireframe of the first page.

Development plan

After reviewing the feedback of heuristic evaluations I created the list of changes I am going to make and I also decided which prototype I am going to develop into an interactive prototype.

I created a development plan for upcoming weeks in a table form which would make easy to go through task are completed and how much time it took to complete.

Low- fidelity prototype

I finally decided on the which paper prototype I’m going to created interaction prototype.

In this phase, I created the screens for the interaction prototype which would be used for user testing.

In-person user testing

In this phase, the low-fidelity prototype is user tested by at least 2 users. To conduct user testing 2 tasks were assigned to the users. I mission is to observe how well and fast the user are completing task.

After the in-person testing based on the feedback, I add few changes to the porotype. I also created a test plan for the A/B testing.

A/B testing

In this phase, I prepped a test plan for the A/B testing. After I add all the changes to the B versions of the prototype. Then I went to the Usertesting.com and order the test and got the feed back. After reviewing the feed back I noted down the changes I have to make.

Finally presenting “Sleep Well ” app to the world.

Finally, this is the app I present which can set alarm and can provide you with some tips when need help to fall asleep. The name of the app is “SLEEP WELL”.
