Putting the blame solely on the providers of the music is ignoring the greed inherent in companies like Spotify. Yes, they had to negotiate licenses with the major labels but they always had an IPO in sight. This vision enabled them to win the fight for ridiculously low royalties. The business doesn’t seem to have been designed to last, but to be a Wall Street stock flip, much like Pandora is. That is why the major labels all have stock in Spotify…. no one expects it to last, simply to have a successful IPO. In the meantime, artists great and small are being underpaid.
