Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory

Found in the picturesque area of Bullocky Point, the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory invites visitors to deep dive into the fascinating history and culture of Darwin and beyond. Our Darwin city tour takes in many of the area’s most prominent attractions, and this museum is definitely one of them.

At the museum itself, you can wander around exhibits from internationally renowned artists and local creatives, as well as discover a range of culturally and scientifically important collections and the research programs that run alongside them.

The Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory has a permanent collection on display that allows visitors the chance to take a trip down memory lane and learn some of the stories that have made Darwin and its surroundings the place it is today.

As well as hosting year-round exhibitions, there are a number of temporary shows and displays that are installed throughout the year to provide a dynamic look at life in the Northern Territory. Many of the temporary exhibitions are put together from the permanent collection to provide different insights into different parts of Australian culture and history.

On top of this, the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory regular hosts travelling exhibitions that are making their way around Australia. The Telstra National Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Art Awards are held at the museum, which is the most significant award of its kind in the whole country.

Alongside the permanent and temporary exhibitions, the museum also hosts a selection of handpicked talks, workshops, and activities throughout the year that tie into the different displays and major cultural events.

When you’re not wandering around the exhibits and diving into the rich world of Australian cultural heritage, there is an onsite café to grab a coffee in.

Getting to the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory

Visiting the museum is easy if you’re in Darwin. Simply hop on the number 6 bus, which stops pretty much right outside the museum. Alternatively, you can walk to the museum from the centre of Darwin. It is a 4km walk, but you’ll pass a series of landmarks on the way that are worth seeing.

Darwin has such a rich and fascinating past, much of which is still imbued in the surroundings and modern-day culture. You can experience all of this and more at the museum through the exciting range of exhibitions, workshops, and shows.
