Visit Daintree Rainforest

The Daintree Rainforest can be found in the north of Cairns, along with the coast of Queensland. It is one of the oldest rainforests on the planet and is listed as a world heritage site. It is an essential sight when travelling to Australia, with over 400,000 visitors annually.

History

Estimated to be 180 million years, this rainforest has been around for much longer than humans. The first human contact estimated to be thousands of years ago, with the Kuky Yalanji people, a tribe of local aboriginals. It is the only place on the planet where two world heritage listed sights are side by side.

Activities in Daintree Rainforest

Mossman River or Daintree River: Saltwater crocodiles

The rainforest is home to many incredible animals, including Australia’s famous reptile beast, the Salt Water Crocodile. Travel down the Daintree River in one of Eco Accredited River Cruises and see these scaly creatures’ swimming along the water surface. Although the focus of this cruise is the crocs, you also might get to see some of Australia’s favourites, such as the kangaroos and koalas. Colourful birds, reptiles, frogs, and insects all roam in this area as well so keep your eyes peeled.

Alexandra Lookout

After your crocodile adventure, set off from the Daintree River to trek to the Alexandra Lookout. This short, ten minute walk is well worth the picture-perfect spot to see the rainforest meets the reef. Jaw-dropping views of the lush jungle as well as the sapphire sea of the Great Barrier reef. Make sure to bring your camera as this view is very Instagram worthy!
Swimming Holes

Within the lush rainforest lies some amazing swimming holes, perfect to cool off in after a full day tramping through the jungle. One of the best freshwater swimming locations in the area is Mossman Gorge. The crystal-clear waters are surrounded by large rocks as well as the spectacularly untouched green scenery. If you are looking for a waterfall, Spring Creek Falls lies at the end of a narrow valley. To reach it, you must hike 1.5 kilometres through the lush wilderness, so bring your good walking shoes. The travels are well worth the endurance as the hidden gem of rock pools and cascading water is an unforgettable sight.

Marrdja Boardwalk

To see the wonderland of lush trees, amazing flora and fauna and animals aplenty, travel to the Marrdja Boardwalk. This simple wood boardwalk weaves through the jungle, breaking off into different trails. Find the hidden gems of the forest, including the famous mangroves forest area. It takes less an hour to complete, perfect for any kind of fitness.
