After a good amount of thought I’ve decided that I actually don’t find this weird at all! In fact, for some fans it might be necessary. I think that certain fans may reach the point of becoming so caught up in a story that they have a certain vision for it and instead of trying to change what the producer had invisioned for the story, this offers the fan a way to create what they might have in mind. It also fosters community for the fans, which just ends up usually making the fan base larger. It’s a win win for everyone really.
