Bollywood movies shot in Himachal Pradesh

Himachal Pradesh — Bollywood’s Popular Locale for Film Shooting

Himachal Pradesh (HP) in North India is one of the most beautiful places in the country rivaling Jammu and Kashmir. The state is known for its fruit orchards and towering mountains in the background. Owing to its topography HP is peppered with hill stations such as Kullu, Dharmasala, Chamba, Manali and Shimla attracting tourists from overseas and other Indian states. Obviously, such a beautiful place is ripe for exploitation especially by Bollywood. Often, HP becomes a focal point for shooting climax scenes or more important elements of the plot or simply a dance sequence. Most films capture and depict the beauty of the place magnificently and most photographers do justice to the scenery. There are as many as 28 films that have been shot in HP. Almost all film producing states of India have used HP in their films. Ensure that the Himachal tour packages one chooses includes a visit to the locations where the following films were shot.

Jab We Met

The film starring Kareena Kapur and Shahid Kapoor became a big hit when released after being shot extensively in HP in the year 2007. Manali and Shimla have been filmed exquisitely and they form the backdrop for many sequences in the film. The Rohtang Pass and the Himalayas have featured in a song sequence. If people who have seen the film and want to see these places where the film was shot, then they should look for Himachal tour packages that must include Shimla, Manali and Rohtang Pass in their itineraries.

In the year 1992 India was well into facing the dubious machinations of terrorists from across the border. The Indian film industry latched on to telling stories about the hardships faced by the society due to the ill effects of terrorism on Indian soil. Roja was one such film where terrorism forms the back drop for a strong husband and wife relationship. The film’s scene of action is Baramulla in Jammu and Kashmir. However, owing to the security issues in Jammu and Kashmir the film was shot in and around Manali in HP which is similar to the conditions prevailing in Baramulla. Manali is a twin hill station with Kullu and these two hill stations are the most popular in North India.

Any of the Himachal tour packages without Kullu and Manali in them is not acceptable.

Just for the record, Roja turned out to be a landmark film for people involved in making the film such as Mani Ratnam as a renowned director, A R Rehman as a future Oscar award winner, and Santosh Shivan as a famous cinematographer. Time magazine in 2005 declared the film’s soundtrack as being one of the ten best of all time.

Any movie tidbit without a reference to Amitabh Bachchan is unthinkable in India. The movie Black starred Amitabh Bachchan and Rani Mukherjee. The film was directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali. Some of the memorable parts of the film were shot in Shimla in HP. The film gave an opportunity to witness the depiction of Shimla in pre-independence days. Some of the shooting was done in the erstwhile Viceregal Lodge, the summer capital of India during the British Rule.

The film showed the Viceregal Lodge beautifully and when in Shimla on any of the Himachal tour packages visitors must make it a point to visit the lodge and see for themselves some of the historical moments captured in photographs and articles.
