Who are we?Identity Recognition
Thoughts after watching “Crazy Rich Asians”
A few weeks ago I saw a video made by reporter Johnny Harris in Vox Borders, it was a video about HK and China.
Finding it an interesting issue and the market change a close topic to what we are facing, I did some further research and heard voices from the people discussing the topic of “identification”. It was a familiar emotion but not a familiar topic for me.
Growing up in the States and in Taiwan I felt awkward. Having yellow skin I was a foreigner in US, having a weird accent and lack of sense in culture I was a foreigner in Taiwan. So then when I saw the video I sensed that this is the feeling so called identification. But still knowing the name doesn’t mean I get the answer, and cause there so much other things to do I soon forgot the problem again.
Yesterday, I went to see the move “Crazy Rich Asians”, besides the romantic story of a precent cinderella and a charming British-accent prince charming, the whole idea of a Asian-American movie was phenomenon. It’s been 25yrs from the last Hollywood movie with all yellow-skinned cast “Joy Luck Club”. And the story was full of contradictions that felt so close to mine, presented in such a humorous way.
So, back to the big Q, who are we? Such a big question and hard answer, in a world with so much freedom, yet with such a thick culture that holds us in relations and etiquette.
This morning in our morning prayer things started to make sense — A child of God, is not defined by the color nor language nor background nor culture, but defined by God our heavenly father, the one who created us and gave life to us. It was so emotional to know that my root is in God’s land and life is in God’s hands.
Who are we? We are extraordinary individuals that are unique, undefinable. We are children of God.
