Why Singles Need To Pay $15K premium for HDB Flats

According to Single Singapore Citizen Scheme, buying two room HDB Flats for singles are quite costlier than married couples as they need to pay $15000 premium. Reporter Ng Jug Sen said that when people buy new HDB flats they also enjoy the subsidies that are included in the flat’s prices. The subsidies are meant for couples or for two or more residents.

He also said that singles who will marry another citizen or a permanent resident of Singapore can apply for the CPF Housing Top-Up Grant after getting married and get the same subsidy as a family. Thus the single buyers who will marry after purchasing the HDB flats will get back the spent $15000 that will be credited to their CPF ordinary accounts. He also spoke about the theories that apply to the difference in housing grants between singles and doubles like Additional CPF Housing Grant (AHG) and Special CPF Housing Grant (SHG)

As per the scheme since 2013 eligible singles of 35 years of age and above are buying HDB flats . From that time they can buy only new two-room flexi flats in non-mature estates on a full 99 year lease. Before that singles could purchase from the resale market in lieu of grants that were half amount for the couples.
