This is one of the most touching and brilliant novels I have ever read. I will confess, I am not a huge science fiction fan, but this story about a mouse called Algernon and a man called Charlie truly breaks the mould. If you’re looking for a great summer read, then definitely add this one to your reading list!

Without giving too much away, Flowers for Algernon (written by Daniel Keyes) is a powerful and thought-provoking novel that explores the consequences of artificial intelligence, the ethics of scientific experimentation, and the essence of human nature. It tells the story of Charlie Gordon, a mentally disabled man who undergoes an experimental surgical procedure to enhance his intelligence, and Algernon, a laboratory mouse who undergoes the same procedure and becomes exponentially smarter.

The novel is written in the form of a series of journal entries written by Charlie, which allows readers to see the world through his eyes and experience his transformation firsthand. As Charlie’s intelligence grows, he begins to understand the world in ways he never could before, but he also becomes increasingly isolated and struggles with the newfound complexity of his emotions.

Through Charlie’s journey, the novel explores the themes of identity, intelligence, and the nature of humanity. It asks important questions about the role of science in society and the ethical implications of manipulating the human mind. The story is both heartwarming and heartbreaking, and it leaves a lasting impact on readers. To paraphrase Maya Angelou, people won’t remember what you say, or even what you do, but how you make them feel. Well, this book will make you feel!
