Ideation. What is that? I mainly get one of two reactions when “ideation” is brought into conversation. 1. WTH/F/S is that?! 2. Aren’t those expensive brainstorming sessions for employees to generate hundreds of useless ideas that never turn into a product or vision?

Ideation sessions don’t have to be a waste of time. There is power in the technique, especially when performed in groups. When executed in a focused way, ideation can yield fruitful results and lead to true innovation.

Ideation is a creative process to help you think far and wide - haul your net in and pick your prized catch.
Thinking up ideas is the easy part

The problem isn’t coming up with ideas. Entrepreneurs usually have the opposite problem. They have too many ideas! but how to get to that one to focus on?

Some, think ideation is only about generating as many ideas as quickly as possible. Whilst it is true that idea generation is a key part of ideation. The secret sauce to turning a plethora of ideas into one viable idea? is to follow through with clarity, prioritisation and iteration. Clarify, Prioritise and Refine.

Anyone can generate ideas. The secret sauce is to further clarify, prioritise and refine.
method to the madness (Skillshare)

1. Generate
This is the easy part. Go wild with whatever comes to your head, generate as many ideas as fast as possible. Don’t analyse them — don’t question their viability at this stage — let the ideas flow… Cast your net far and beyond.

2. Clarify
Ok, let’s look at these ideas. Eliminate the obvious non-viables at this stage, the (electric cow delivery service)’s — if it’s a fintech related session for example. Start questioning the feasibility of the now dwindled list and realistically asses their viability.

3. Prioritise
Pick your favourites! Create a shortlist of ideas — compare them against a set of weighted criteria important for your desired outcome (i.e implementation, skill required, time to market, competition, impact, adoption requirements, cost) . This is important for assessing their viability. You should now have a short list of more focused solutions.

4. Refine
Keep iterating and improving the idea. Continuously assessing, refining and challenging a solution is key to true innovation and growth.
