I wonder how much of it is laziness and how much of it is that we find it so much easier to use a traditional, digital background to save time on drawing? I have a friend who used to draw elaborately beautiful drawings by hand, but once she switched to using the computer to draw, it was like she no longer put in as much effort to detail. As a writer, I can relate — I used to write by hand as a kid, and it was relaxing to write by hand. When I switched to the typewriter, I felt like I had to meet a certain word count, and when I started with the computer, I found I was writing entire chapters as bare-bones as possible. The tool made it easier for me to not focus, rather than the other way around.
