A lot of people grow up in a world where there are only one god and no information to challenge that belief.

My plan for this series is to go through, in alphabetical order a list of gods or deities and include a short (paraphrased) story about them. These are all stories from people who held their belief as strongly as people do today.

Hopefully, you will understand how stories like these are created and what this may mean for your beliefs.

Azeban

a trickster deity from the Native American Abenaki belief system. He was one of 6 children of Awasosqua (a Bear Woman). Being a magic bear women she gave birth to you guessed it; dogs! She named them after their appearance: Little Bear, Long Tooth, Squirrel, Little Moose and Good nose. Glooscap a great warrior punished Azeban by drawing on his face and tail with charcoal just like a raccoon so he is often referred as the raccoon trickster…even though he’s a dog deity.

Afternote:
His mother is a bear, he’s a raccoon, his siblings are a moose and a squirrel. Notice these are all native American animals. This tale draws on the natural world to create it’s stories so they revolve around the animals they had access to at the time.

Bila

She is many things, a goddess, a cannibal and an occasional ball of light. She would catch humans and roasts them over an open fire like a shish kebab. One day Kudzu the lizard man suggested to Bilba

You should probably stop eating people. It’s kind of messed up.

but Bila replied

Yer how about no, I need dat meat in my belly.

Kudzu then threw a boomerang into her face. She was very upset as you would be; so she turned into a ball of 🔥 and disappeared over the horizon. The world was plunging them into darkness and Kudzu remembered how scary darkness was.

He throws boomerangs in all directions until one boomerang caught her and dragged her back across the sky.

Afternote:

Thus sunrise and sunset are born! Thanks to lizard man and a cannibalistic fireball.

Cavillace

A virgin goddess was hungry one day so she ate an apple.

This was no normal apple.

Coniraya, the moon god had a unique ability to turn a ball of his sperm into any fruit; great trick at dinner parties no doubt. Cavillace found one of this sperm apple and had a bite. She instantly became pregnant because …magic fruit sperm and gave birth to a son.

Being understandably mad, she asked the father to step forward. No one did. So in full proof way to prove who the father was, she put the baby on the ground and watched it crawl towards Coniraya

She was ashamed at how uncool Coniraya was among the gods. She did what any normal goddess would she ran to the coast of Peru and turned herself and child into rocks forever.

Dokkaebi

This Korean creature is similar to a leprechaun, Goblin or Imp. It is said to be created when you spill blood on an old object.

Not quite sure how long you need to age an object before it’s Dokkaebi ready but I assume It can’t be like a new pillow from Ikea. Better not cut yourself in a wine cellar, is all I’m saying.

Unlike western goblins these critters like helping humans but can bring bad fortune or disease if they feel like it, not that different to a normal human I guess.

Real talk

These are just a few new deities to add to your collection. While I use humor to explain some of these stories, it is important to take note that these are real tales that people believe in just as strongly as you maybe believe in your chosen deity.

Do you want more?

If you enjoyed these stories, please clap so I know if I should make more.
