Business entities have been late adapting to this social and digital reality. They are now ramping up their investment of time and treasure in social and digital technologies in order to catch up with empowered customer or client. Business Leaders now realize this new social & digital environment exist, but most have not participated on social with their stakeholders.

Once the digital and social connections have been created, how will businesses sustain and grow in this hyper-connected and morally-dependent world?

Purpose, Values, and Measures of Relationship Capital

As a business leader, what is your purpose? What is your organization’s purpose? Do you hire people based on their character and values? What are the guiding values of the organization? As a leader do you believe in creating more leaders or just getting results.

Once you and your organization have its purpose, and values clear, it’s time to start assessing, capturing, measuring, and utilizing your relationship capital. Today, we do not just have a career’s crisis, but a leadership crisis. With the explosion of the digitally-connected and empowered employee and customer, social conversations and social relationships are forming and most leaders are not participating.

Leadership today is at least as much about influence as it is mastering the financial statement. Now is the time to develop your social credibility skills and build relationship capital that will inspire risk-taking that achieves innovation and results. For example, merely having a Linkedin profile is not enough. Especially if you do not have a professional photograph of you on . This is not trusted and limits your ability to influence your stakeholders.

Conclusion

Leadership today must be part of the social conversation. If you want to effectively lead your team in this networked world, you need to consider moving up this Hierarchy of Social Credibility. At the top of the pyramid, you will be serving your team by communicating and supporting a position and intent. You will nurture and elevate your organizational culture by sharing your purpose, inspiring performance, and building high relationship capital trust.
