As the article notes, increased female AP CS participation belies the fact that most women choose not go on to major in CS or drop out if they do. Simply being exposed to coding or routed into a CS curiculum track hasn’t been shown to meaningfully increase graduate and career participation later. This is why, for example, Google’s vast diversity efforts have barely moved the needle; the pipeline deficit of women choosing not to enter (or remain in) CS as a career which drives the computing career gender gap that has actually widened over the last thirty years.
