In addition to salaries, raises, bonuses, commissions, and benefits, these incentives can be used:

  1. Job opportunities: Satisfying and challenging roles, responsibilities, and assignments
  2. Goals: targets included in performance plans and communicated and inspected regularly
  3. Performance reviews and promotion requirements: making good ratings and promotions dependent on complying with goals and meeting specific expectations
  4. Recognition: thanks, praise, and honors
  5. Rewards: tangible and valuable awards, desirable training and conferences, and meaningful engagement with leaders
  6. Gamification: application of typical elements of game playing (e.g., point scoring, competition with others, rules of play) to other areas of activity to encourage desired behaviors — includes leader boards, digital badges, and task completion percentage indicators
  7. Inspiration: communicating authentically, sharing a compelling vision, and telling powerful stories
  8. Empowerment: listening to, trusting, and enabling people to succeed
  9. Action: being bold, innovative, and decisive
  10. Leading by example: modeling desired behaviors
