There are many good ways for subject matter experts (SMEs) to share their knowledge. Here are five suggestions:

  1. Document proven practices and lessons learned
  2. Post, answer questions, share materials, and present in Communities of Practice (CoPs) and Enterprise Social Networks (ESNs)
  3. Create and contribute videos containing tutorials, nuggets, and stories
  4. Create and contribute documents to a knowledge repository
  5. Tell stories and conduct training on community calls, in apprenticeships and mentorships, and on recorded videos

Here are ten suggestions for enabling knowledge sharing:

  1. Establish a new, or strengthen an existing, knowledge management program
  2. Provide incentives for sharing knowledge
  3. Establish CoPs and ESNs, and ask SMEs to help lead them and be active in them
  4. Identify SMEs by monitoring CoPs and ESNs for those who regularly share and answer questions, and then recognize those people
  5. Ask SMEs to develop training courses on their specialties
  6. Ask SMEs to create personal guides to processes, contacts, and content
  7. Conduct interviews using videos and community spotlights to collect SME stories, instructions, and tips
  8. Ask SMEs to submit their top ten most used documents
  9. Establish mentor/apprentice pairs
  10. Schedule regular workshops, seminars, and meet-ups to allow SMEs to tell stories and answer questions
